A pet parent’s guide to beating the heat

A pet parent’s guide to beating the heat

Hot weather can be tough on our furry friends. Whether you have a playful pup or a chilled-out cat, rising temperatures mean it’s time to take extra precautions to keep them safe, hydrated, and comfortable.

Some pets have thick, fluffy coats that make warm weather feel even hotter. If you’re wondering how to keep your furry friend cooler than a cocktail on the beach, you’ve come to the right place.

Choose cooler times to head outdoors

If your pet enjoys spending time outside, try to plan walks or garden time during the cooler parts of the day. Early morning or evening is best when the sun is lower, and the ground is cooler. For dogs, avoid hot pavement which can burn their paws. For cats, make sure there is access to shade if they like exploring outdoors.

Keep fresh water available at all times

Hydration is one of the most important ways to keep pets healthy in the heat. Make sure their water bowls are always full and place extra bowls around the house or garden. For a refreshing bonus, you could provide a frozen Axel’s Elixir treat which promotes hydration.

Treat them to frozen goodness

Just like people, pets love a frozen treat on a hot day. Axel’s Elixirs frozen bone broth treats are the perfect way to cool your pet down while also supporting hydration and nutrition.

Create a cool space indoors

Keep your pet’s chill out area shaded and well-ventilated. You can use a fan to circulate the air or close curtains during peak sun hours to keep rooms cooler. Cooling mats are a great option for dogs and cats who like to lie on the floor.

Protect sensitive paws and skin

Surfaces like pavement and decking can become dangerously hot in direct sun. Test the ground with your hand before letting your pet walk on it. If it's uncomfortable for you, it's unsafe for them. Also, don’t forget that some cats and dogs, especially light-coloured ones, can get sunburnt. Pet-safe sunscreen can be used on exposed areas like noses, ears, and bellies.

Skip the overexertion

Exercise is important but overheating is a real risk. On hot days, it’s better to reduce activity and focus on keeping pets entertained indoors. For dogs, swap long walks for short play sessions. For cats, interactive toys and puzzle feeders can provide mental stimulation without raising their body temperature.

Never leave pets in parked cars

Even a few minutes in a parked car can be life-threatening for animals. The temperature inside can rise rapidly, even with windows cracked. If you can’t bring your pet inside with you, it’s always safer to leave them at home.

Add a splash of fun for your little pirate

Many dogs enjoy a quick splash in a shallow paddling pool or under a hose. Always supervise to ensure safety. For cats who may not love water, a cool damp cloth wiped gently along their back or paws can help regulate body temperature.

Know the signs of overheating

Keep an eye out for symptoms like heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, red gums, or unsteady movement. In cats, open-mouth breathing is a serious warning sign. If your pet shows any signs of heatstroke, contact a vet immediately and begin cooling them with damp towels while you wait.
